My favorite tradition is that on Christmas Eve, we enjoy a special homecooked meal, clean up the dishes and then sit near the tree with the Bible and read the passage from Luke, Chapter 2. Then the children (youngest to oldest) take turns choosing a gift from under the tree and presenting it to the recipient. This is SO much fun.

i think my favourite tradition is turning off all lights but those from the christmas tree and sitting around and singing christmas carols some time in the lead up to christmas day... it's just so peaceful and all about taking time to contemplate, getting things in perspective. jessica

Opening christmans presents one at a time on Christmas eve. By one at a time, we go in order from youngest to oldest and each open one gift and then start again. It takes a long time but you get you to see what every one else receives.

Our tradition is to go to grandma's house, 2 hours away the day before Christmas Eve and stay through Christmas Day Morning. The 23rd we do a Seafood dinner, 24th is Fondue. We open presents Christmas Eve night and the kids do stockings Christmas Morning.

Growing up we opened presents on Christmas Eve. Instead of putting names on the presents, of who they were to, my parents put numbers. My mom kept a master list of number 1-100 and would write down on her list who's number belonged to who. One might have number 1, 4, 6, 8, 18 ect. The youngest picked the first gift, announced the number and mom would say who it went to. That person would open the gift then go pick a new number. It was the best!! I can't wait to do it with my kids as they get a little older!

Christmas eve is One gift to open. Christmas morning is Cinnamon Buns and talking about Jesus (with three kids) Then the bells ring and presents are opened. After supper we sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS and celebrate HIM. My family makes Lefsa and it's eaten all day with sugar and cinnamon (on top of butter..not healthy but whatever) There is ALWAYS Christmas music and Christmas colored M&M's and LOTS of hugs.

My dad and I have a special tradition that we do every year. We put on Sandi Patti's "The Gift Goes On" record (ahem, now CD and yes, very old school) and listen to the song "Bethlehem Morning" while we sit and admire the newly decorated Christmas tree. It's a special father/daughter moment each year.

We don't do this anymore- but when I was growing up, on Christmas Eve my Mom would take my sister and I to visit friends. We would deliver hand made gifts that we had made during the previous month. We literally did this all day and returned just in time for a quick dinner and then church services. It was so fun seeing all of our family friends. Oh and the advent wreath. We always made our advent wreath and it was very special to us each season. I plan to start that with our little family next year.

Every Christmas eve the kids get to open 1 present - new jammies, then we make hot cocoa for Santa. We put out the freshly made cookies for Santa with the cocoa. Right before bed we read The Night Before Christmas. We even did this with our new additions (B/G twins).

One of my favorite traditions, although we haven't done it in a few years is to have everyone write on a piece of paper what they want to achieve in the next year. An example would be...to start living in the moment, be more grateful, volunteer 5 hours a week at ???, etc. It can really be anything. Then place them in a sealed tin box. No one looks or reads anyone elses. Then we pack it away with our Christmas decorations. The following Christmas we open it up and see if we accomplished what our hearts had desired the previous year.

My favorite tradition is to put up the Christmas tree with my parents. We used to turn on old records of Christmas music and sing all together while we put up the tree. Now that we have a 3 year old and another on the way, we are trying to come up with our own family traditions including putting up the tree together. The holidays really make you appreciate all that you have. :)

We have pizza and chili at my grandparents' - we used to have the full-on turkey dinner but one year my grandma had her knees replaced and wasn't up to cooking a big meal so they ordered pizza the night before and my grandpa made chili. The next year she made the big meal but we were all kinda sad and said "Where's the pizza?" so now that's what we get every year :)

We have several traditions that I enjoy but one of the sweetest is that on Christmas Eve, my husband grabs the book The Night Before Christmas and he snuggles up with our daughter and reads it to her. Watching him read with such excitement and seeing her engaged with such amazement melts my heart. She is 4 now and enjoys it more than ever. : ) Lisa in VA

One of our long-standing traditions is having waffles with strawberries and whip cream on Christmas morning too! We were talking about it, and I think we've been doing it for 23 years now! Love it! A new tradition that we started this year is making Jesus a birthday cake. Brevin and Ellie are still a little too young to understand everything, but this is a great way to help them learn!
